November 29 Holiday Journal! Before I get started, I just wanna say a MASSIVE Thank You/Mg Goi/Arigato to everyone who contributed to this truly great vacation. It kicked off with a bang, and it ended on a high. Karl, Chris, Rachid, Chemie, Phong, Imran, Law, Kar Yee, Kevin, Milla, Prudence, Kelly, Vivian, Chris' family, Emi (shame didn't get to see you), Amy, Diana, Andy et al...
I salute you all *bows*
Day 1 - Tribeca It begins. Left Heathrow after everyone apart from me spending yonks chatting to Angela :) We're going on holilday :D Smooth flight. Arrived in HK at about 5:30 local time with Chris' parents meeting us, and picked up Octopus. We're here! The heat... it just hits you, especially coming from chilly London. A12 bus to Causeway Bay...first glimpse of the sights of HK - the suspension bridge, the port and the tall buidings. Excitement builds. Reach hotel and feedback is positive. Shower and head out to Causeway Bay, Times Sqaure and Sogo. Wow. The whole place is buzzing. Window shopping before meeting Karl's bro for Szechuan dinner. And then the holiday really starts. Link with Chemie and her crew to head to Tribeca, a club in Wan Chai apparently popular with BBCs. 200 HKD to get in with unlimited drinks, although some of them do taste funny. We then proceed to dance the night away. Chris dances but develops a bad habit of squashing vulnerable toes. Stumble out at 3:30am rather worse for wear and wander the streets for a while before finally finding our way back to Causeway via Circle K. Chris insists on turning the light despite it waking poor Rachid. THE HOLIDAY HAS BEGUN Day 2 - Hei Hei Boy it was hard to get up, missed breakfast. A taste of things to come. Decided to hit Stanley Market in Central on the lookout for cheap digital cameras. Slightly underwhelmed and with Rachid snapping away there may well be little point buying one after all :p Head up the Mid-Level Escalators, and up, and up and up. Get a call from Kar Yee to meet up in central but get lost and end up in Sheung Wan. Link up eventually and head up to Mong Kok. First time on Kowloon side... Spy the Ladies Market and an interesting badminton shop before hunting for a laptop in Monkok Computer Centre. On the lookout for a 17" monster multimedia and entertainment system, but nothing much on offer. Head for cheapo char sui fan in Fairwood. Waitress lady asks if I've finished, I reply yes, but she turns around and walks off instead of taking my tray. Strange. Head to Sham Sui Po and Mcdonald's for a chocolate sundae before looking for Internet so I can access my shopping list. Find a dingy hot room full of ten-year old kids playing Counterstrike. We use Net for 10 mins and pay $1. Generous. And then the fun begins, as we enter the world of dodgy computer and video games, a.k.a. Golden Centre. Karl comes into his own and, armed with my Ds Lite spec (kindly donated by Chas), proceeds to do some wheeling and dealing to get us our electronics. Then follows 3.5 hours of observing as our FOUR DS Lites and one PSP are set up. You can see the dollar signs in their eyes. Kar Yee leaves for dinner and soon Chris does the same. We leave at about 8:15 heavily laden with consoles. Dinner with Prudence - Japanese in Admiralty. Gosh do they seriously call that a glass of wine? Anyway. We then head off to Lan Kwai Fong to meet up with Chemie and her crew and hit Hei Hei Club. We kick off the dancing and everyone follows, soon the dance floor is rammed and you can't move. Rachid dances. A lot of alcohol is downed and a lot of fun is had. Chemie wants more, just 15 minutes more. That's how good the place was :p Eventually we stumble home late & hyper. Awesome holiday thus far. Clubbing, eating and already I've picked up all the consoles on my shopping list. Day 3 - Symphony of Lights Another struggle to get up. Harder than yesterday. Try to meet Kar Yee to give her the DS but get lost. Breakfast - French Toast and coffee. Head off to TST minus KY to witness wonderful view across bay to HK Island. Massive shopping centre called Harbour City where we indulge in a ridiculously cheap KFC bucket :p With egg tart for dessert. Shopping in Harbour City where I pick up Chas' Sammi Cheung disc with KY's help, and Chris buys a load of shirts. Coffee in Starbucks to wake up a bit as everyone is flagging after the last two days. Watch the amazing Symphony of Lights show across the harbour where Rachid is in his element with his newly-acquired tripod. Then we head back to Causeway to meet with Chemie, Phong, Imran, Law and Kevin for a Japanese BBQ-style dinner. Tried a Calpis Sour which was good. Move on to a cinema where we watch Death Note (12:30 showing), this strange Japanese movie about death.. and this all-powerful notepad. Hmmm. Run home to hotel afterwards but I won't disclose why :) Day 4 - Neway Monday. Time for some serious sight-seeing. Rachid & I link up with Prudence and head to Central while Chris goes to renew his ID. We head up the Bank of China building to witness the incredible view and also inside the well-renowned HSBC building. Cash travellers cheques in Bank of China but it takes ages. Go to Jordan to visit travel agency where our Japan tour is being organised from. Pay up and listen to Cantonese speech. Free food and drinks :) Head to The Peak up the tram. Reminds me of Switzerland *dreamy*. Souvenir shopping, Mcdonald's and loads of photos taken where the view is magnificent. Korean buffet for dinner back in Mong Kok, before Prudence books kok in Neway. Dodgy place but we have a very good time singing and playing drinking games. DON'T STOP ME NOW, I'M HAVING SUCH A GOOD TIME... etc. Rachid sings.
November 20 See The World1) AWESOME HOLIDAY. Thanks to everyone who contributed to making this vacation such an unforgettable one. Naming and shaming to follow.
Photos and journal will be put up during the course of the week :)
2) MISSION STATUS: Acquirement and delivery complete. Deployment to follow this week sometime (hopefully). I just pray the damn mass of chunkiness works! September 30 Hold on a secWas meant to go MK today but engineering works out of Euston and a lightning strike on the Bakerloo Line meant the trip was curtailed at Marylebone >_< So I came home to see Liverpool whipped 2-0 by Bolton.
Working next Saturday and on-call on Sunday and the whole weekend the week after that. But I just have to be within a couple of hours of the office so it should be ok.
Just finished watching Lost Season 2. How big is that island?! It's not as good as 24 but it's still a quality show.
Plans for HK/Japan are underway. Overall vacation will be from 2nd Nov - 19th Nov. Should be a few others out in HK at the same time which should make the holiday more interesting. Note to self: ask at work about stuff to do in Osaka and about mobile phones in Japan.
Being the naturally cautious person I am, I never write anything of note on this Space. Just general mutterings. So therefore I think it might be time to revisit xanga... mine has been out of service for almost a year now.
September 20 Cutt OffDrifting through life.
On the downside I have a cold, have loads of stuff I need to sort out and exchanging my trainers is proving a hassle >.<
On the upside, am going to see Avenue Q on Friday which should be funny, been playing badminton a lot lately and there is about 6 weeks left until I go to HK. And karaoke at Lucky Voice was good fun.
Oh and more birthday photos up in the Photos section >>
Finally back on broadband... Sky Broadband... and it's been good so far.
September 04 Center ParcsWas a v. good weekend. Played five-a-side, badminton, table tennis, golf, snooker, pool. Was lumbered with a bunch of indisciplined oafs in the footy tournament but despite that we did ok. Held the eventual winners to a 0-0 draw with some heroic defending. Came second in the table tennis tournie behind my bro after beating him in the group stages. Seem to have forgotten how to play golf =(
Wild water rapids in the Subtropical Swimming Paradise was very good, went on there a lot. Cycled around everywhere too. Center Parcs seems over-priced but there is loads to keep u entertained. Food is good but portions are small.
No idea why i'm doing a blog now. Maybe cos i'm in the library and need something to fill up my ten remaining minutes of Internet time. Limited Net at home for the moment thanks to Bulldog's incompetence so can't upload any more birthday pics >.<
Had tapas last week but I think tapas tapas is better than La Tasca. Sangria quite strong.
Better end it there. Got to decide whether to move depts at work or stick where I am. May 06 Dancing ShoesGet on your dancing shoes
And the shit, shock, horror
The only reason that you came
…the lights are flashing
Don't act like it's not happening
The only reason that you came
Get on your dancing shoes
Oh and the shit, shock, horror April 24 Fitter happier:o 27 January was the last time I updated this Space... almost three months ago now. It's weird, before I had loads of time to write blogs and maintain the Space, but now.. zilch.
Bought OK Computer by Radiohead~ yeah it's an old album but it is an all-time classic and now I have listened to it a few times, I understand why it deserves that status.
Been going to the gym more and playing more sport esp. badminton.. doing tooo much exercise so need some recovery time =\
Went to see the Pixar exhibition in the Science Museum, which was pretty cool but I don't know if it was worth £9 =p
Went to play Topgolf, which was a lot of fun. It is a driving range but with a difference~ you score points based on if you hit the ball into targets on the outfield. Better than a normal driving range.
Liverpool are through to the FA Cup Final.. woo hoo. Could not watch the last few minutes against Chelsea.
The cricket season has started...yeahhhh. Looking forward to going to see a game.
Wimbledon is just TWO months away now; the French Open about a month away :D
Did ice skating for the first time... now I want to do climbing (note to self: must make EFFORT to get up and go climbing)
January 27 TransgressionHave not logged into this space for ages, but I feel like inputting some more entries.
Today, I felt like it's time I expanded my music collection with more all-time classics, and have come up with this album shopping list:
October 18 The Guy in the GlassWhen you get what you want in your struggle for pelf, And the world makes you King for a day, Then go to the mirror and look at yourself, And see what that guy has to say.
For it isn’t your Father, or Mother, or Wife, Who judgment upon you must pass. The feller whose verdict counts most in your life Is the guy staring back from the glass.
He’s the feller to please, never mind all the rest, For he’s with you clear up to the end, And you’ve passed your most dangerous, difficult test If the guy in the glass is your friend.
You may be like Jack Horner and “chisel” a plum, And think you’re a wonderful guy. But the man in the glass says you’re only a bum If you can’t look him straight in the eye.
You can fool the whole world down the pathway of years, And get pats on the back as you pass, But your final reward will be heartaches and tears If you’ve cheated the guy in the glass.
(D. Wimbrow) October 10 Suddenly I See
October 03 Nobody said it was easyPlayed golf today...a nine hole pitch and putt in north-east London. I used a new grip, which involved wrapping my little finger around my other hand. Apparently that is the proper way to grip and it seemed to increase my accuracy and control over the club, so I'll be using that grip from now on...
Anyway I went round in 36, which was quite good. I hit a couple of 3s and did not go over 5 on any of the holes I played...
On another note, the Hard-Fi album is really good, particularly the songs Cash Machine and Stars of CCTV... and I've been listening to it a lot. I also bought the Green Day album American Idiot, but not had a chance to listen to it yet... September 27 can you feel itOver the weekend, I met up with some of the Malaysian side of my family. My aunt came over from Brunei to see her daughter -my cousin, who manages a restaurant on the South Coast. I also met my other cousin (I think "second" cousin) for the first time ever...
We ate at my cousin's restaurant on the Saturday evening...it's an eat as much as you like buffet, but it doesn't just do chinese food, it does malaysian, singaporean, nepalese and even indian. The food was very nice and I ate loads, particularly as it was eat as much as you like. The restaurant was very packed on Saturday night...
We stayed over on the Saturday, and in the morning I had this massive English breakfast consisting of something like bacon, sausage, hashed browns, tomatoes, toast, fried bread and baked beans. Well, they did say you could choose SIX items off the menu...and I was the only one to do that...
So when it came to lunchtime I was still quite full from breakfast, but I still had to oblige as we had a big family meal for Sunday lunch. More food! I really will need to do some working out or play some sports this week...
Anyway, played snooker after lunch with my cousin, and managed to win :p
Went home after that and got home to London pretty late. All in all, it was very good to meet up with my family and I had a fun time, especially as it was by the seaside...and it didn't rain all weekend :) September 13 Ashes ParadeSaw the Ashes Parade today
I can say "I was there"
Got good pics of Vaughan and Freddie Flintoff- see Photo Album >>>> September 10 UncertaintyIt was Jason's leaving drinks on Thursday night. He reserved a room in a nice pub near work and we all had a good time. Went to a club after which was full of City boys and City girls, but only stayed for half an hour or so...clubbing is not really for me. Then came home via Mcdonald's. Bad cos I never normally eat fast food like that, but Mcdonald's and BK are the only places open in the City at that time of night! So couldn't avoid it...
I normally watch the US Open tennis a lot but this year I have hardly watched it. But managed to watch Kim Clijsters play Maria Sharapova in the semi finals last night and it was a really high-quality match, especially at the end of ther second set.
And tonight at 11pm is Federer vs Hewitt! Federer will probably steamroller him in straight sets as per usual, but its still worth watching cos Federer plays such watchable tennis~ September 05 Center ParcsI've just got back from a long weekend in Center Parcs. It was a top weekend, there are so many things to do there, plus the weather was very nice (except for this morning when it chucked it down). This must be the fifth or sixth time I have been to Center Parcs, and I do thoroughly enjoy myself every time I go. The activities I did included tennis, badminton, mini tennis, snooker, american pool, table tennis, adventure golf and ten-pin bowling. My tennis first serve is getting better and better in terms of power although I still need to achieve the consistency. And suddenly I'm pretty good at badminton, the new racquet really does make a difference. The highlight was probably when we played on the Par 3 9-hole golf course they have there (which was very well-kept). That was probably the best golf I have ever played, I went round in 37...which would translate to a handicap of 10 on a real golf course. I holed a 15 foot putt from the fringe to get a par on one of the holes, and on another my approach shot actually hit the pin (although I somehow missed the resulting one foot putt *cough*). There was also a golf simulator there, which was a good laugh. The real golf course is displayed on a projector screen in front of you (I played the famous Pebble Beach course in the US) and you basically whack the ball up against the screen to simulate the shot. It's really hard though, even with the power boost on. Anyway, I don't want to make this too lengthy, so I am going to end it there. Suffice to say, Center Parcs is a really cool place to go, especially for a weekend. There are no cars at all, so you cycle everywhere, and cycling is something I do very much enjoy when I get the chance. August 27 Driven to distractionBig shout-out to everyone who came to my birthday drinks on Thursday: Lai, Linda, Mylee, Dipak, Mark, Chris, Ed, Gerry, Ras, Ivan, Satheesh, Yibing, Jun, Hero (thanks for that TRIPLE rum/coke), Emiko, Rupel, Bart, Holly, Jason, Mitesh, Jon and Vikram. Plus Lily and the other couple of people I hadn't met before that evening. Um sure there were more people there, but I can't remember any more right now, so apologies if I have forgotten anyone!
And Lai it was so funny when you went to the WRONG station. How can you get Cannon Street and City Thameslink mixed up? And I gave you a map too
Also I want to say thank you for all the birthday wishes I received from everyone else. Much appreciated
I got home about 11:30pm (via one of those new BBQ McChicken Sandwiches from Mcdonald's), so not too bad at all. Felt okay the next day as well, I slept slightly later than I have been recently but I still managed to get to work pretty much on time. And then the Krispy Kreme donuts for brunch probably helped to keep spirits up~
August 21 CarelessnessHad a very nice lunch today at a restaurant near where I live. It was a typical Sunday lunch, but very very tasty indeed. Will definitely try and return to that restaurant in the future. The menu went something like this:
Starter
Chicken Liver Pate on Toast
Main
Roast Turkey, Yorkshire Pudding, Roast Potatoes, Sausages wrapped in Bacon, Vegetables and Gravy
Desert
Apple and Caramel Pie in Custard
In the morning, played more tennis at the local sports and leisure club -_-
August 20 Tell me what you want to doTwo minutes past eight, Saturday 20th August...and the National Lottery is on. It could be me...but it won't be. Because I don't play the Lottery. Therefore eliminating any chance I have to win. Hmm maybe I should start playing...
I've played pool three times this week, and in fact won each time I played. So I'm turning into some kind of pool shark now, which is surprising because before this week I hadn't played pool for ages, actually since the middle of June
It's weird how I picked up the know-how to play games like pool and snooker. Because when I was young, I played this game on the PC called Virtual Pool. And part of the game was a video tutorial by an old pool pro on how to pot balls and execute positional play. I've never forgotten the tips from that video, they will stay with me forever -_-
Also went to AKA bar near Holburn on Thursday night. It was a good place - more like a bar with a dancefloor rather than a club. Had more of that dodgy Havana 7. Very nice drink, although it is strong so I stuck to a single -_-
Played tennis today with a friend. This is another game I haven't played for ages, and I was really slow to get going in the first set and lost comfortably. Just couldn't execute my shots! Once I got going in the second and third sets though, it was fine and I got into a nice rhythm, especially on the forehand which I started to time well
More tennis tomorrow, then a big lunch -_-
August 09 Top 5 Cricket Sledges: Numbers one and two2. Glenn McGrath & Eddo Brandes:
After Brandes played & missed at a McGrath delivery, the Aussie bowler politely enquired: "Oi, Brandes, why are you so fat?"
"Cos every time I f*** your wife she gives me a biscuit," Brandes replied.
1. Rod Marsh & Ian Botham:
When Botham took guard in an Ashes match, Marsh welcomed him to the wicket with the immortal words: "So how's your wife & my kids?"
P.S. Great victory for England at the weekend!
